Hi there, and welcome! I’m so glad you’ve found your way here.
My name is Janea King, and I’m a writer, educator, and communications strategist with a deep love for storytelling in all its forms. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but these days you’ll find me in the Hoosier State where I’m soaking up the Midwest’s charm and searching for the best coffee houses and shoppy shops.
I hold an MFA in poetry along with dual B.A.s in English Literature and Creative Writing from CSU Long Beach. For over a decade, I’ve worked in higher education teaching English composition, critical thinking, and creative writing to students from a wide range of age, literacy, and fluency levels. This experience has deepened my appreciation for rhetorical analysis, communications strategy, and effective argumentation.
What You’ll Find Here
This blog is a space for:
- Clients and creatives looking for copywriting tips, branding insights, and communications strategy
- Fellow writers and educators searching for ideas, inspiration, or shared experiences
- Book lovers who enjoy thoughtful recommendations and literary deep dives
- And anyone who appreciates creativity, design, or meaningful messages
I’ll be sharing posts about writing with purpose, designing for accessibility, what it’s like to balance creative and strategic work, and a few personal favorites along the way. If you’re into gardening wins and fails, the occasional musings over Diet Dr. Pepper, or Bravo TV drama, you’ll feel right at home.
A Peek at My Bookshelf
My most frequently used apps are Libby and StoryGraph. There’s no thrill greater than trying to race the clock when you have an hour and a half to return a book that you still have three hours left to read. ADHD + 2.5x Playback Speed = Match Made in Heaven
I love reading books that make me sob my guts out. Some of my recent favorites have made me cry so hard the sunscreen burned my eyes while driving in heavy traffic on PCH or the 405 Freeway. The first is Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. It’s a thoughtful and deeply gutting exploration of creativity, friendship, and the stories we build together. I also loved Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale. I made the mistake of listening to it while driving through the preschool drop off a couple of years ago during one of the most crushing, violent scenes and low key still feel a bit victimized by Kristin Hannah. The third heartbreaker rounding out the list is Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys. This one absolutely ripped my heart out. It’s such a beautifully aching story about friendship, resilience, and racial injustice. Just don’t listen to it behind the wheel.
